I have a female at the end of a 10ft main vine that has had the growing tip eaten off, is it worth polinating it? I will train the closest secondary as the new main, should I wait for females on that?

if the females ok you can pollinate, and grow your sid vines around it as a new main. Make sure you get enough room for the pumpkin to grow.

Last year I set a pumpkin at 9ft out and then broke the main about 6 inches past that. I let it be and grew the side vines out as a main. Didn't seem to effect the pumpkin much, as it grew well despite my stupidity. I could not get a set on the side vine soon enough to make it worth culling the one on the main vine. Has I been able to, I would have culled it.

i had a rabbit or woodchuck nibble the tip of a main, leaving only the female exposed, about a week before it was to open. I couldn't have trimmed it better if I had tried. It became this pumpkin:

Tango, Andy had the same experience as me. Somebody chewed the tip off my main. I used the female that he missed and trained the secondary as the main. Working so far. Lots of critter problems. I need the Fischer Cat back.

I think some of the growers actually terminate the main after their final fruit has been chosen as they most of the energy comes from the stump side. Don't want to open that can of worms, but many have been very successful with little after the pumpkin. Also allows for easier positioning. Good luck!
