how long can you leave a female fower open before it will no longer take the male flowers polen?

Not long. In most cases a bee or other insect will make the pollination within minutes of the female opening.

If not pollinated, the female will be spent within several hours of opening.

Have some of the rest of you noticed a dramatic decline in the bee population? I swear, I could practically leave my flowers open and they'd never get pollinated

"Several" hours meaning up to half a day. There as been a lot of commentary as to how long the flowers remain viable but nothing real conclusive. Generally speaking, the sooner a flower is pollinated the better off.

I try to get there in the first four hours after open.

As for bees, yes they are down, but there are a lot of other insects that will go after nectar and pollen and do the deed for you. If in doubt, bag before open, do the deed yourself, tie up, and cross fingers. (and chill the gal if it's going to be over 80)

thx everyone for the advice, i just never let a female flower get past a few hour"s before pollenating it so i never knew how long they could last for i"d imagine if it was cooler out side they would last a lot longer then if it was wormer. josiah and as for the bees they are not down over by me
