Over the last 3 years Iv'e had 2 plants out of 20 double vine on me. I was wondering how often this happens to other growers.

2 out of 4 doubled/flatvined for me this year.
1 out of 4 did last year.
2 out of 5 the year before.
2 out of 20 doesn't sound bad to me at all.

I found something today I had never seen, my first side vine doubled but my main is fine. Is this common?

i've had that before craig.

going from rough memory, i'd say overall i'm maybe 5% that at true mutants (double vine or flat/ribbon), but a good 50% or more of the total have some kind of doubling - usually for a single segment or two, or an odd side vine.

Does the parent have 1370 Rose in it?

As Andy said some plants exhibit doubling for a single segment.
I had a 801 Stelts x self I terminated the main on and had no more problems. Iv'e been reluctant to grow the crosses from it.
This year my 1st 1048 Rahe (1450 wallace x self) went flat vine on me. It's so ugly I would't pollinate anything with it
My second 1048 plant has shown no signs of doubling.
I grew the 1238 Brunst (1370 Rose x self) with no problems

I've had a few secondaries double on single main vines. Usually for one or 2 nodes as Andy stated.
