Okay folks, I know how to do it, I have been very successful with using the traps in the past. TOday I caught a skunk, and I never wanted to put the trap in the car and take it out in the woods and release it, due to the spraying possibility. I let the skunk go, and he ran under my deck, where he lives (as I just found out).
Two part post here,
1. How do you transport a skunk?
2. Do they "really" cause any pumpkin problems, or are they just a menace with the smell? Of all the animals I have caught inthe traps, they are the most tame it seems. Not like woodchucks and squirrels.

You put a tarp or blanket or something large enough to cover the trap then you can move them I have done it a few times no problems

Schweigerts right on. If you're nervous, wait until it goes to sleep (usually by late morning) cover it up and go for a ride.

Don't know about causing pumpkin problems but they are constant diggers. They like grubs, bugs, worms and anything that moves slower than tey do. They are one of the main carriers of Rabies.

first off why dont you just end it's suffering it's not that hard! all you got to do is get 1- neddle 1- stick 1-skunk now take your stick and pick up your needle and tape the needle to your stick now for the fun part get your skunk(make sure he is in a box trap) and ginngerly stab it in the neck and he will die in about a minute or two and on the plus side he will not stink every thing up with his skunk piss.but if you are a tree hugger just do what schweigert said.

From everything I have read and with my experience, skunks are one of the most biggest carriers of RABIES and should ALWAYS be destroyed and never let go. If you live in a Town or City then you should be able to have an animal control officer come and get it. Let them have the worry about hauling it off, LOL. If you live in a rural area then take other means to dispose of it.

or you could use a simple pelet gun so if you live in the city no one can hear you shoot it,and that mean's no cops

I cover the the trap with a blanket. Have fun trying to cover it with out getting sprayed. Once its covered, I see how long they can hold their breath under water- in my neighbors pond. Sorry to offend anybody, but they are the #1 rabies carrier around here. Plus I don't need to deal with the dog getting into one. Don't bait with meat. They love steak bones...

Thx for all the tips, Like an idiot, I decided to let it go, as I have never seen any problems with skunks in the past. Now my problem is it ran under my deck and into a hole (his home) which I didnt know existed under there. Now I must retrap him and when I do I think I will go with the swimming lesson idea at the Chemung River.
The "stab em with a spear in the cage one" really cracked me up.

probably should just leave em alone. chances are he will not bother your plants, but if you are going to use a trap, use a lethal one so that you do not have to take the chance of getting sprayed and your family making you sleep outside.

I'm probably late to this discussion, but I dealt with skunks last year, so I know a little bit about them.
Diggers, yes they are... I have a basement, with windows for the basement bedrooms. The skunks actually dug TWO separate holes down so that they could clown around inside the window well. Each hole was dug so well, you would have thought that it was done with an auger.
They don't seem territorial. If they don't have what they need, they'll move on. They had no interest in my pumpkins or anything else in the garden that was growing.
If you put eggs in your compost, stop. That is what attracted them to my patch. I think they also like the remains of watermelon, or anything sweet. I might need to start burying my compost.
If you remove whatever is attracting them to your place, that's probably your best option. I'd like to kill them as well, but then you have to deal with the smell and disposal.
