I just want to get the message out to all growers that here in Connecticut I just caught my first Squash Vine Borer of the season in one of my pheromone traps.
The traps main purpose is monitoring, but my thinking is every moth in the trap is one less on the plant. This also tells me when they arrive and what pressure they are putting on the plants (based on how many I catch over a period of time.)
Best of luck this year to everyone.

Matt, the traps only catch males, so they don't technically hurt the plant anyhow.
Good luck with them.

Hi Jamie-
I purchased my trap from a company called 'Great Lakes IPM'. This was suggested to my by an extension person who goes to a bunch of different farms doing IPM (Integrated Pest Management) work.

Then go to page 21 and you will see the traps. I usually purchase an extra lure and put it in the trap later in the season to ensure I have fresh sent throughout the growing season.
Just a reminder if you do get the trap hang it at plant height. Too high or low will reduce its effectiveness. I mount the trap on a small piece of wood, then to a PVC pipe. Then I pound a stake in the ground and put the PVC pipe over the stake so I can have some control over the final height. It works for me.

I haven't seen any in NH yet this year...if you guys set up enough traps, maybe they won't make it across the border. Of course, we do have the SVB king here in NH..Jim Kuhn...so it's probably just wishful thinking.

Must be nice, we've sighted and squashed two, and third spraying is scheduled for Monday. (we're on every ten days here). Our 'day' is now set as the 10th, and we will start spraying earlier than that every year from now on. Sigh.
