Lets just say you somehow burnt your main tip, which secondary do i make the new main, the first one off the main is my guess but need to ask the question.

The main on my 1149 snapped off a few days ago so I let the first sidevine take over and it seems to be doing well. I am no expert but I would pick the first strongest sidevine.

Gary, both main vines on my plants were taken by squirrels so I just let the closest secondary take over. Both have recovered nicely and did not need to be trained...they simply took over as the new main.

In addition to what has been already said, you can take into account which secondary is growing more vigorously and also look at which one has the straightest angle from the main vine as well. I broke my main and decide to make a new main from the secondary closest to the stump of my plant since I have a long season here and can easily wait for it to grow 12 feet. Best of luck!

I would say the firtst good growing secondary, closest to the mainvine tip. If you take the closest one to the crown(stump), you won't properely be able to utilize the other secondaries that have formed.

I had my main badly damaged by hail about 4 weeks ago. On good advice I terminated the main as close to the secondary as I possibly could. The secondary took off almost immediately and within a week you wouldn't have ever known there was problem (except for the fact that all of the old leaves looked like swiss cheese).

Pick your strongest secondary. I have one that had main termed at 5' by frost, and it actually tossed out four strong secondaries, which have made a nice large plant. I just took off the set on #2, and the set on #3 is the prime at the moment, and the set on #4 is about to come off. (all seconds on that side are past 20' too, pretty evenly)
On another it put out one strong secondary off the main, and that secondary is such a strong grower I am setting the fruit on that. (yes I have inspected it, it is a secondary not the main). So, go with the flow (grow) of your plant.
