Is there a "sweet spot" distance that you want to set with X-distance being too close and Y-distance too far yielding diminishing returns? If so, does the pattern matter or the number of laterals?

I think 12' - 14' is one of the sweet spots. My best ones are always there. as well I've seen a lot of the biggest ones come from this location. ( but not all)

Usually, my keeper is whichever pumpkin the critters haven't destroyed.

I researched this a little during the off-seasom...... the average distance of the top ten pumpkins listed on AGGC is 15 ft.
The closest-in was the 1524.5 Liggett at 10 ft.
The farthest-out was the 1521.5 Razo at 21 ft.
Joe Jutras set the WR 1689 at 17 ft. out.

So, I took the closest 10ft,farthest 21ft, wr 17, added them up, 48, divided by 3 and got 16,,I'm going for 16ft.
