Roger I would say if everything is ok with the pumpkin on the main vine that you just pollinated, then cut all other pumpkins off the side vines.Micheal

because your plant is so late i would say pollinate at 8 ft and out on the main. if you dont the season might pass you by you can still grow a respectable pumpkin

Is this late for polenating? I thought June 29 to first week in July. My main is not at 10' yet.

It partly depends on how long your growing season is yet (how much time you have left) AND if you're aiming for a certain weighin or fair. The longer your vines and the further out you set, the bigger a plant you will have to produce that big pumpkin. If you can place it well, eight feet will work.
I have almost two seasons in my patch right now, one set late for age of plant, at 12' on (15' at the time) and 14' on (17' at the time)... my main lost end at 5' due to frost so secondaries have taken over. That one will be done by early August or so, just to finish...plant is over hill agewise, was my 'accident'. The second set of two plants are for fair/weigh in in early September and are at 8' plus right now and growing well. One has produced flowers (and been cleaned off) and will be set in early July for Sept. I was told the plant should be ready to set up for pollinating about 70 days old and another 60 days to fruit easing on growth rate and mature enough to go to weigh in. ...
How are your night temperatures? Mine didn't start growing until nights started staying in low fifties or higher...
Rog... cut off most of the other females or set ones (bees are industrious little cusses and sneaky too) but leave one or two for another week or ten days in case the one you just set doesn't pan. I'm really being paranoid now on flowers and taking them off on already set plant. If you want a few males for crossing with something else leave a few else take those off too.
Jeremy... see my ramble... try to go for at least eight feet but go according to what you have to backtrack from. (end of season one way or another...) I agree with Pap, you can still squeeze one in if mid-late Sept is the end of your season.
Rob... when is your fair or weigh in, count back two months. I'm aiming for 9 Sept so 5-8 July is when I'm planning to bag and play bee. Those plants are currently at about 8'... so two more weeks should mean they're well grown and raring...

probably...no, definitely aughtta keep one or two other pumpkins SOMEWHERE on the plant in case the one on the main vine isn't the 'keeper', right? that one 'egg in the basket' can get really lonely all by itself, roll-around too much and break. always have a backup.
