I think this would be an honorable achievement and I have a couple of contenders in mind right now, who would get your vote?

I could never win the award on this web site, however I must have done a great job of bagging last year to an ex-friend/grower. He sent me an email in October last year and asked if I was coming to the weigh off. I said yes and that I should beat my weight from the previous year (355 lbs). I then showed up to the weigh-off with a 919lb pumpkin and took down his state record to which he took great offence and now refuses to talk to me...oh well...poor loser I guess..

There are others that learned from the master. They now possess the SB force and will use it when the time is right.

Might be G's biggest sandbag of all times!...He'll show up in October telling everyone he found this 1500 lb'er growing behind his shed....didn't see it till yesterday!!! Must of come from some seeds from one of his culled Squash the year before.....Won't be able to verify it's a true squash cause he didn't see ifthe Pea was green from the start!!! LOL G!

sandbagging is another name for dishonesty. it goes on with a lot of growers. heavy hitter and newbees alike.
i dont know if people lie when asked about their pumpkins progress because they are afraid that if something should happen they will need to answer questions ? or is it because they like to be the hit of the show, shocking everone by showing up at the weigh off(usually at the last minute) with something no one knew they had?
hey its a competition so everyone is welcome to do as they please. me? id prefer to be honest. its only a friggin pumpkin

I think think some amount of bagging is fun. I remember the unknown growers from a couple years back....Pap...and that to me was a bit of sandbagging.....nothing wrong with good natured baggind. IMO there is a big difference between a little bagging and flat out lying, especially if it's at your competitors / friends expense...and it could literally cost them big $$.

on the flip side why do some people always have to know what every one else has ? Maybe if your being lied to you shouldn't be asking so much.

when friends call us and ask how we are doing ? we tell them the truth. so likewise we would expect they would do likewise, especially during the same conversation ?
hey i know some guys who are so secretive they dont even let anyone into their patches from august on. i have no problem with that either.
personally i think a man or womans family and friends are more important than the persuit of a giant pumpkin or beating them out at the scales.
and lying is still being dishonest

"sandbagging is another name for dishonesty."
Well, I don't know who pee'd in your cornflakes or who turned you so sour Pap but thats the most rediculous comment I've heard in a long time. But...you are Pap and I have nothing to gain and all to lose by disagreeing in public so I'll stop. I'm with Quinn on this one....and Chris S ...and Owen makes a goodpoint..also....its about fun....why have a weigh-off if everyone knows what they have and who's bringing what?????

Heck if I have one taping close to 1,000 pounds, you can bet your sweet bahookie that I am going to be spilling the beans. I would be to excited to keep it a secret. Unless of course its my bet that I have with Kenny, then I will just have to whoop him at the scales.

I have up enough tarps now the parade of slow moving pickups through our alley to see what's back there can't see... so the paper said they'd print vine pics if I get them of the grower's club's plants. No secrets here....

Pap and Ron are the two most generous growers out there. They share knowledge, experience, good or bad and best of all, their patch at the tour every year. Don is an open encyclopedia of GP information. Everyone else including G has helped me personally more times than I can remember. I do have to say I do not care who sandbags as long as it is entertaining. So far it has been and for that I thank the sandbaggers. I come to this site in a bad mood and leave laughing histerically. My wife thinks I am nuts. Thanks!!! BTW, I could not keep quiet either, Erin.

I'm in the middle somewhere on this one. I don't like to lie to people like pap said... but I really like quinns reply too.
So I think if someone asks you what you have you can always say something like: "I'd rather not tell you what I have and I'd rather not know what you or anybody else has, that way we all can be surprised at the weigh off, won't that be more fun?"
I actually told someone once that I'd rather not tell them. He was all upset, and told me that he thought we were friends and that as president of the club I shouldn't be hiding things and keeping secrets from other growers... so I showed and told him. I wish I wouldn't have. I don't think you should have to show or tell anyone anything if you don't want to. and that's my 3 cents worth.
LOL @ Don !

I like the guys that sandbag, I think it makes it fun at the end of the season. I have had a lot of fun with growers like G over the years by their big sandbagging techniques ,lol. I dont think sandbagging is dishonest but more like pulling a prank or a joke among growers, it gets a good laugh when the season is over I think. I dont think that not telling someone what you have growing will do anything at a final weigh off anyway because the biggest pumpkin wins no matter if they knew what you had growing or not.

all i can do is smile smile smile. i love this site. we are all a bunch of kooks and i am proud of it!!!! the bullshit stops when the tail gait drops is one saying, but when they hit the scale is when it really matters. unless you are growing on a scale, nobody knows. last year i squeaked into third place at our weigh off cuz a guy entered the wrong pumpkin. his exhibition was heavier than his official. i still lost a hundo for betting who will get over a 1000 lbs first, but i made that up in prize money...and i got the ribbon....lol. he knows who i am talking about. and the second place pumpkin went light and looked like a 1400 pounder but weighed 1150 and mine was a 915 estimate but weighed 997. side by side mine looked puny but was only 153 pounds difference. sandbag or do not sandbag, it is all about having fun. but the truth is on the scale.

Even if we know what a grower has do we really know? Heck McKies and Al Kopp must be the 2 biggest baggers ever. They were saying they had 1350# and 1250# fruit respectively and the scales read 1600++ and 1400++. Da gon guys!
I would HATE to go around tooting my horn with a 1800## taping fruit and throw a balloon on the scale. I think that's why most growers stay pretty quiet. No one wants to go light!

Last year i was in unknown territory when asked i said what i was taping, but i don't think they believed me. i did not weigh my pumpkin in the patch and stopped taping at 402" but i have to say it was a blast pulling into the weigh off " and we do it in a big way" trailer decked out music playing loud just a lot of fun !! my pumpkin did go 3% light but 1317 was OK to me. call me what you may! my patch is always open and we welcome all

I think its just part of the fun. Some do seem to want to keep their secrets. Others want to go to the top of the world and shout, "I have a 300 lb pumpkin." And they really do just have a 300 lb pumpkin. I don't have time to do any sandbagging, I haven't even started my seeds yet.

does chevy show off their new redesigned corvette before its done?
why talk about something that is really nothing until it hits the scale?
