Nitrogen leaches through the soil. It needs to be replenished each year. If you put a few yards of fresh manuer on this spring you should do fine. Otherwise, you can tell by the deep green color of the leaves that you have enough. You can get it from soluable fish that comes in liquid or powder. Powder is cheaper. I also use a generic version of Coccadoodledoo from Agway. Unlike other nutrients N does not last too long in the soil.

In general terms AG's like between 130-170 lbs of actual available nitrogen on a per acre basis. Keep in mind as a general rule the organic matter in the soil will provide about 10 lbs per % Om, so a 5% OM soil will have 50 lbs/ acre and an 8% Om soil will have 80lbs/ acre of N. My soils sun about 8% OM so I strive to add an aditional 50 lbs/ acre of actual N on an equivilent basis. I do this by applying about 6 lbs/ 1000 ft2 of Ammonium sulfate.
Additional N is added by foliar applications of ferts including fish.
Many folks do not add any aditional N other than from compost and manure. If you soil is in really good shap and high in OM, lily no additional N is required. If you soil is not amended, you will likeley need more. Keep in mind that we are getting late to add large amouns of N depending on how large your plants are. If you have vines in the 8 to 10ft range you will be pollination in a week to 10 days. Do not apply additional N at this stage. If you plants are smaller and you are 2-3 weeks from pollination, you can safely add some additional N.
I would avoid Urea all together as it is to slow release.
