not to mention any names and/or start a ruckus but this a website for growing pumpkins and that SHOULD be about it. we put the plants out there and then expect the animals to leave them alone as though they are to respect that we are doing anything other than feeding them. i do NOT like to see what happens to plant-eating animals who just happen to take a liking to pumpkin plants, and i don't think it is funny nor appropriate for the results or proceedings involved in their eradication to be displayed so proudly on these otherwise pleasant and informative web pages. i will not answer back any hate email so if there is a comment any stronger than "Gee, Eric's a wuss!" then placing it here will be okay by me. okay, carry on.

Glenn, the post with your cat that killed the giant squirrel is my new screensaver. I'm an animal lover but vermin are vermin. Pumpkinpal, a little too much wine I think.

Eric, I don't know what post(s) you're referring to, but I think your opinion should be respected. Some people don't like the sight or thought of animals being harmed. That being said, I have a couple of rabbits around that I worry about....whatever happens to them, I won't post anything about in my diary.

I can see his point. This is a site that children frequent and some people really just don't get into seeing animals killed. Do those kinds of images have a place here?

My local newspaper frequently puts pictures in the sports page of hunters and their trophies (deer, turkey, coyote etc.)I've had mine in there a few times. Nobody has ever complained about it...but I guess different areas have different ideas. Backwoods country boy here.

do svbs count? seriously. is there a difference? cuz one is cuter than another does not make it any different in my eyes. the same can be said abouting weeding. just because you have great fertile soil for pumpkins, is it the weeds fault for wanting to grow there? i understand your point about not showing gory pics for kids to see and i respect that. but your statement saying "we put the plants out there and then expect the animals to leave them alone as though they are to respect that we are doing anything other than feeding them.", this offends me. with this rationale you are opposed to weeding, insecticides, tilling cuz worms are harmed, or mousetraps around pumpkins. killing unwanted critters is part of this hobby whether you like it or not. you can't have it both ways.

I'll try to be serious for a minute. If the original post is referring to the cat and squirrel, then I don't get it. A while back someone posted a bear that was killed and strung up and that image was waaaaay more disturbing and nothing was said. Maybe Eric is referring to something else that I don't know about. "G" rated nature shows depict images and situations that are far more graphic than Glenn's pic. I don't want to see blood and gore on this site either but that pic didn't cross any boundaries as far as I'm concerned. I have bird feeders and squirrel feeders in my back yard and I don't hunt but, a cat with a dead squirrel, please. There, done being serious.

1: what are you? 2: I'm an otter. 1: and what do you do? 2: swim on my back and do cute little human things with my hands 1: you're free to go
1: and what are you? 2: I'm a cow 1: you're not a cow, you're a baseball glove, get on the truck

"whatever happens to them, I won't post anything about in my diary."--thank you, Doug14. it's been a few hours, about 35, since i had been on here 'cause i suddenly had some work to do after i had posted. yes, Glenn, your kitty and squirrel are what TRIGGERED me to say what i said and i'll feel the same about it even if a squirrel eats every bit of my 904 Stelts, lol. i just DON'T think it's amusing--the squirrel in a CAGE, about to be drowned, even as a joke. shoe on the other foot, think about it. we are all in control of what we post, say or display, so think twice. maybe i'm proud of my anatomy. maybe i'll put pics of my biceps on here. oh, for sure, somebody will be annoyed by it, so i'll refrain from doing that. it (how i kill my nemesis) is one segment of the whole picture that is totally unnecessary and again, cruel. don't anyone take it personally, as in some of the OTHER things that were mentioned i had not seen, and Shazzy, we're not acquainted at all, so i'll carefully say that, by putting a tasty treat out there such as a pumpkin plant that is wayyyyy different than the native plants and then perhaps expecting critters to NOT take a chunk out of it is crazy. so it may be an unintentionally-set trap for them, but as soon as they take a bite, oh, now it's WAR on them. and yes, i realize i may now be the king of double standards, 'okay to kill bugs but not animals' (although i never said that, 'til now) but WEEEEEEEEEE are animals too. we think, we feel, we experience pain and horror. just try to tell me they don't, to at least an appreciable extent. i cannot even imagine what i'd do if i drove by some house and saw some guy kicking his dog...i'd be in jail in no time, with a new dent in my car, shaped like a man. ANYWAY, thank you all who agree with me, thank you all who don't but had bracing (sobering) remarks to the contrary, and thank you to any who just plain cracked me up--each of these categories had too many to mention>

Actually people.....This is a public place. Correct?? People do things in public that we may find offensive or off color. On the same note, we do not go up to every person who does something offensive and tell them about it. As for offending children?????? Has anyone taken a look at some of the video games your kids are playing???? CHECK YOUR FEELINGS AT THE SIGN IN SCREEN!!

Lets see...hunting shows, fishing shows, the news, movies, video games and have alot more disturbing things on them and it all comes down to your choice to look or not. The last thing I would worry about is some pics of animals that are dead or in the process of being dead. Jeeez. Get a grip.

eric, i was not being facetious in my post nor was i trying to insult you in any manner. my point is the same as the logical debates i have with vegetarian friends of mine. they believe it cruel and inhuman to eat animals. but yet they think nothing of killing plants. just because i am an animal doesn't give me right to disrespect all the plants and call them souless as well. to live we must take life one source or another. you ever see chimps hunting squirrel monkeys? yes. ever see a falcon kill a pigeon yes. it is all part of life. ask a vegetarian if they would eat a houseplant they grew for 20 years if it was edible. they say no cuz they are attached to it. it is a double standard. being a vegetarian for health reasons is one thing, but to say i am not supposed to have a steak dinner cuz they are repulsed by the sight of blood offends me. the svb you kill does not want to die. it only wants to make babies and reproduce they same as a squirrel or a groundhog or whatever. i have squirrels in my patch that have never harmed my pumpkins. so they are not dealt with. the day they eat one of my females at pollinating stage, i will live trap them and set them free in the park. but that is because i live in a residential neighborhood. if i lived in the country they would get a .22 through them. i find no difference in cute and cuddly animals or an ugly earwig. a pest or varmint gets dealt with one way or another. all living things should be respected and the guy who hurts my dog will get hurt. plain and simple. i am an animal lover, but also find all walks of life fascinating and do not consider one better than the other, including humans. i believe in evolution, so we are all related in my eyes. the spider eats the fly and that is the way it goes. so if you kill bugs, do not be holier then though and cast stones at people who deal with animal pests. i forgot why i haven't been around this site for a year or so, now i remember.

OK, have a quick look at this most recent of my diary postings...then we can put an end to this.
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=85801
Eric, while you and I have enjoyed emailing eachother from time to time and even traded some seeds, I must say that I am mildly bewildered why you did not just email me privately with your concerns. Knowing that I am offending you with what I considered some light humour (ya thats the way we spell humor in Canada) I would have taken your feelings into consideration and not posted any more of my battle with the squirrels....or what I consider to be funny.
Having said that, we bleeding heart Canadians are taught environmental stuardship (tree-hugging and animal loving) from an early age in grade school so my treatment of the rodent problem is something that I have adopted out of necessity in my pursuit to topple Jake van Kooten as the British Columbia record holder for growing giant pumpkins!!
With the abundance of trophy buck hunting, turkey shoots, grouse, pheasant and duck hunting, groundhog kills and other pictures of glory posted on this website, I am still shaking my head as to why my killer cat posed with his prize catch and my rodent in a cage wating for swimming lessons would result in a public rather than private lashing....but hey...that is OK...I can dish it out pretty good so I better be able to take it from time to time.
The recent posting by Tom and his 4 day battle with groundhogs, well...broke my heart and I felt for him cause he does alot for the sport and has been so successful over the years and did not deserve his outcome and rightly so, should do what he can to eradicate the problem from his land.
Continued.....

My wife and I bought our second bengal cat partly because we love the breed, they are wonderfull pets and they do a great job of patrolling their land and protecting it from pests including squirrels. I guess I should put a bell on my cat's collar to warn its prey that he is stalking them...or would that be un-natural for a preditory cat that actually eats what he kills....oh that is another topic!!
Boy that was rather long winded...so...in closing again I am sorry if I offended any of you with my attempt in humour in dealing with my rodent problem and I do not take pride in culling the squirrel population in my neighbourhood (ya that is how we spell neighborhood in Canada too) however, I would not be able to grow pumpkins in the area that I live in due to an invasive non-native animal that I consider to be a pest.
Enough said?

now, that's uncalled-for, Mr. Hampton, and i'm only calling you THAT because i don't want to start another entire chapter to this page of back-and-forth comments. we each have our two cents to throw-in. (don't read into that too far; unlike you, i am not calling YOU any names, all right?) i am the FARTHEST thing from any 'GIRLYMAN' and i merely want anyone to think twice or three times about putting pictures on here depicting what, to SOME, is apparently funny or amusing material along the lines of cruelty to animals that have, or could have, dined on some grower's pumpkin plant. i am not a member of PETA, i am NOT against the right to bear arms, and certainly wish i were in 'trouble' on here for selling seeds or something, rather than for having pinpointed a topic that seems to be all right with most of you. again, to keep out of further 'trouble', i will stick to closing this. Glenn, i am very sorry about the vine tip of your most-recent post. never would i expect anyone to go along with MY opinion the first time around, (obviously, lol) whether privately OR publicly, hence the lack of an initial email directly to you. next time i have an issue with anyone i

will do that first, instead. initially, i had said i wasn't gonna name names but you said "Must have been me:" so i admitted to THAT having been the trip wire---but, there had been other things on here in the past for a cumulative effect, like carbon monoxide or something. if you had said in your vine-tip picture that you had caught the little monster and had given him really bad swimming lessons, that would have been far less of a problem for me or anyone if there were no PICTURE. i hope that makes sense to anyone. Shazzy--sorry to have reminded you of your dislike of some things on here such as this discussion; please don't go anywhere. it seems we are on the same page somewhat, but my problem with the plant/insect/animal thing is that if it is warm-blooded and knows you are after it, it must be nearing being a higher life form which i know has all the characteristics i mentioned about feeling pain and horror and so on, whereas as we go down the scale, we have no way of knowing just yet WHAT a bug feels when it is eradicated or a fish when it is caught. know what i mean? double standards everywhere, though, i am sensing now and this could go on all week. i am not sorry i said something. but, oh, to know the future... hey, don't be a 'GIRLYMAN' and keep your opinions to yourself----eric g---only listening from hear on out---

eric, i am not going anywhere. i actually did one of those things like when they say you should write a letter and wait 2 days and then rip it up. i was just in the heat of the moment when associating this whole thing with the groundhog that ate up a whole seaon worth of work of our fellow bp friend. then i wanted in the second post to rationalize my first post. and saying that is why i haven't been around for here for awhile, i wish i could take that back. reading it later yesterday made me laugh at myself like a little kid saying i am taking my ball and going home. dumb way to close out what i claimed to be a logical debate response. no hard feelings eric. different people with different ideas is a good thing and that helps keep all of us in check. you are good for this site and i am sorry for getting up high on my soap box, but those are my true feelings about pest and animal control. best of luck this season and hope you get your personal best. jeff shenoha

yeah, i gotcha.
