Apparently there are different types of mill fabric out there. Does anyone know if the material used as wet belts at a paper company is the best type to use under the pumpkin?

This is the wrong stuff. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=52420
It's thick, heavy, canvas type stuff, and doesn't really help much (although I have used it with a layer of sand over it. The right stuff is paper thin, woven type fabric, and very slick. Not sure which type is used for wet belts, but you're looking for the thin stuff.

In my opinion you are looking for a fabric that a mouse or rodent can not chew through and will allow water and air to move through. The thickness does not matter, but the thinner is easier to get under the pumpkins. We also use an inch of sand on top of the fabric as ball bearings for the pumpkin to slide on as it grows. John

I prefer the real thick stuff. We've used it for years & never had a problem. The way I see it, if a mouse can't chew through it, it's OK with me.

the paper machines use two types of fabric a "felt" and a "wire" that transports the wet paper on the machines. The wire is what everyone wants which BP folks call "pulpmill fabric". It also comes in several thicknesses from very thin to very thick. The canvas type that Transplant is talking about is the felt side. It wont drain water away like the wire will.
