No Joke, this groundhog is a clever one, took out 2 893's, and most of my 1041, 1096 and 1068. Ya just have to know when it's time to throw in the towel. I have to say that after all of this.....I'm looking to put in grass seed...

Geeze Tom...Sorry to hear that...They got me many a time...I have to use a small electric fence from www.Kencove.copm to prevent them from showing up now and be vigilant about it's integrity....164 feet X 28 inches 3.5 inch netting...they stay away...even the deer don't show up. what a heart breaker when those buggers come through.

A conibear 220-2 trap is the way to go. Place it directly over the hole and fasten it down with 2 sticks. I have caught groundhogs in as little as 2 minutes using this method! They are dispatched very quickly and humanely. http://www.conibear.com/conibeartraps.html

Tom don't let them little Bas$%^# get away with that!!!! Larry's suggestion is a very good one, I would add a 12 gauge with 3" 2 shot shells with strategically placed claymores as an insurance policy. A little C-4 in the hole is good also, war is hell but they started it and you should finish it.

Some growers have grown their personal best off of a back up plant. I say "Go for it!"

That's to bad. You can have a beer and mystery meat party, see who can guess that its a ground hog. You might not have enough time to grow a 1690 pounder, but, you can still make a great cross or two or three.

I appreciate all of the positive comments, thats what makes this community as great as it is. The east took 2 plants down to a stump, they are gone, adn 3 other are 3/4 gone, there isnt much hope for them, my main was cleaned of all leaves as were 90% of the secondaries, I do have a few third vines I could use, but not many. Unfortunately I cannot shoot where I am, and yes I do have traps up and the gas bombs for his den. Looking forward to getting rid of him.

tom, start some of your own seeds asap. if they pop in 3 days and are in the ground in one week from today, you will still get to see how some of your seeds do. you will get a chance to still see what kind of grower the plants are and what color pumpkins they produce. do some orange...bright orange genetic seeds as well. you will be pollinating at to 10 feet by 50-55 days i bet with warm summer days helping the vines grow much more quickly than starting a plant in the springin spring. 57 days equal pollinating on august 7th. if you used a back up plant it will be sooner. you can still 24 days in august and probably 16 solid days of growth in september. if it is a warm fall you can still get growth to weigh off which is another 15 days at least. that is 55 days and we all know what these things do those first 45 days. it is worth a try for not just yourself, but for any other grower who experiences your terrible loss this late in the season. treat it as an experiment and see what happens. this is just advice and you can tell me to go straight to hell cuz i do not feel your pain right now, and i do not blame you. but the worst case scenario is you get to see how your own plants produce and with some orange genetics plants if planted right now, you can still have some mammoth halloweenies to give to friends and family, carve for yourself, or sell them to recoup some losses. i am sorry for your loss and hope you consider trying again immediately to kill the pain. it will be a long summer, a long fall and a long ass winter if you don't. hope this helps and if you are already committed to packing it up, so be it. just do me one favor, show us that dead chuck when you get em. shazzy

I understand how you feel Tom and i also understand where everyone else is coming from but if i felt that i was a bit too late getting into the ground and thought that this would not give me the true potential of my soil and i would not be satisfied come weighoff. I'm very much affraid i would be preparing for next year. Just my oppinion.

Thanks again folks, I have to admit, Shazzy's post made sense "it is worth a try for not just yourself, but for any other grower who experiences your terrible loss this late in the season. treat it as an experiment and see what happens" I am going to see what I can do with the plants, I am hoping that I got the ground hog with a smoke bomb....time will tell. Thanks again folks!
