they always start growing straight up and as they get bigger they lay down. Sometimes you have to be careful it does not get to big and fall over during a wind storm or it may snap its self off.

leaf stems do grow up in the air. main and side vines also grow up in the air until they are long enough to allow gravity to take over and they lay on the ground from there own tip weight. we help them lay down by using various methods like crossing a stake on top of the vines out by the tip forcing the vine down a little each day. this is done after the air temp hads warmed up or else the vines will snap

my 1450 wallace started out the same way, I thought someone slipped it a blue pill. But it evenually layed down and is doing great.

Yes they go up then finally go over... I have one that I swore was doing chinups instead of laying down. If you're at two feet of vine and it still doesn't want to lay down then use gentle (note word *gentle*) persuasion and some staking to convince it to go over.

My 889 Reeb was headed for the sky and was up near 2 feet, so I mounded some dirt and laid the vine down softly and was able to get the vine to stay in place and is lookin' good. I will check out your 1048 Rahe.
Good luck Jason
