We have many small leaves and some large leaves near the stump. Some of the large and small leaves are lying on the soil. Cut or don't cut them?

I stick one of my husbands old shirt under the leaves to keep them off the soil. Seems to protect them even from wind.

I started something new (for me anyway) i cut off all leaves laying on the ground, they usually get pretty ugly pretty quickly anyway and i want to be able to spray under any leaf with all foliar sprays. also less places for squash bugs to hide
