On behalf of the Howard Dill clan, I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your sincere condolences, thoughts and sharing of personal memories of Dad. We truly enjoyed reading all your messages which helped get us through such a difficult time. Some of these were used by the Minister at his funeral. Dad did not leave without taking a "hot" seed with him, so if you see a giant pumpkin falling from the sky, you will know he is responsible. We'd like to hope that Dad is reminiscing with past pumpkin greats such as Bill Greer, Fred Calai, Charlie Houghton, Edgar VanWyck, Owen Woodman and many many others. His legacy will live on, each and every year, because of dedicated growers like yourself, who pursue this great hobby with such enthusiasm. Your passion to share this knowledge with your children and friends will continue this legacy and for this, we thank you. Sincerely, Danny
PS Susan Warren (Backyard Giants) plans to write a Remembrance for Dad in this Saturday's edition of The Wall St. Journal.

Danny, Howard's legacy will live on. We all feel your sadness. I am honored to share. I wish he could have read some of the comments himself. We all will be watching overhead just in case but if that big orange one lands in my yard. Do I get to keep some of the seeds? Sorry, it is in the blood. If I ever get to NS, I will sure love to stop in and see where it all began.

The reason I am writing this is because of Howard Dill (Wife bought Mr. Dills Text on growing AG's)the rest is history. I would've never found all these wonderful pumpkin folks.

Danny, I'm new to this hobby so I didn't know that much about your dads legacy other than just about everyone has heard of Dill seeds. My dad had such a wealth of gardening knowledge and I only took in bits and pieces, know that Im interested he's not around to ask questions.
Because of your dad we have this online community where we are all family. God bless. Dave

On the day the news came out, I erected a small tribute to Howard at my patch... http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=83324
We are building a Kiwi vine trellis behond the patch and one of the posts had not been erected yet, so untill it was, I placed the flag over the other post temporarily.... well when we went to place the center post.... where the flag will be moved to..... wouldnt you know that that post turns out to be directly over the LaRue that I recieved from Howard.... coincidence.... maybe not.

I had a real good experience talking with the Dill's on the phone, I had ordered seeds and was checking on the order. They were happpy to tell me about how Howard Dill way back when would put his big pumpkins in his truck and drive to the united states looking for pumpkin contests, which he won. I learned more about pumpkin growing than I knew before I called. They were helpful and understanding to talk to. (I think it was his daughter I spoke to)
