I'm just tossing out an idea here. Maby in the winter a bunch of seeds from the biggest AG grown this year should be put up on auction and the procceds go to support cancer research. If the Dill family and whome ever grows the big one this year.

I think it would be polite to ask the Dill family where the proceeds should go in his honor and state growers would like to support cancer research. Great idea. I am in.

I like the money going to the cancer research also. I also think there should be a plaque (can't spell)somewhere on a wall honoring him, is there a giant pumpkin hall of fame yet?

Money for cancer research in Howards memory sounds like a great idea.
I think another way Howard could be honored for all he has done would be to make an award called the "Howard Dill Award" that would be given to the grower of the largest pumpkin each year much like the Orange Jacket that growers compete for. Whether that be a trophy or whatever, that would be nice way to remember Howard for the hobby we all enjoy. Vince

Cancer research is a very worthy cause and gets boatloads of money from a lot of resources. A scholarship for a student of agricultural research at a University in Nova Scotia to help a student with a dream of growing things set up in Howard's name would perhaps be an honor more appropriate for the life of the man. It's just an idea but I can see that the pumpkin growing community is the sort that could support an effort like that. Is anyone familiar with what it may take to do something like that and is there enough interest to pursue this?

The Giant Vegetable Growers of Ontario (GVGO) will be announcing soon, a Cancer Fundraising Raffle of 3 L/E, S/N "Great Beginnings" prints of the original Dill homestead in Windsor, NS. These 3 prints (#9,#10 & #11 of 15 S/E prints) have been signed by Howard Dill himself & 100% of the money raised will go to the Cancer Society in the memory of the Pumpkin King, Howard Dill. There were only 15 prints signed by Howard, 9 went to the GVGO & 6 were kept by the Dill Family for their club's fundraising efforts. Our first 2 prints (raffled off at the Niagara Convention & GVGO Seminar) raised $400 so far for the Cancer Society. We hope to increase that amount substantially with this & other raffles to be held later this fall at our weigh offs. We hope that you'll support this great fundraising initiative, as most of us have been effected (directly or indirectly) by cancer at one time or another in our lives. Again, 100% of the money raised will be donated to the Cancer Society in the memory of Howard Dill & in honor of other AG growers & family dealing with this devestating disease. Details will be announced in a couple weeks. Again, the GVGO will not make one cent on this raffle.

Setting up a scholarship is very easy. I have done this very thing in my daughters name at Western Oregon University after she died in a car accident. The school will set it all up. It requires an minimum endowment of about 15,000 dollars to create enough interest to support a yearly scholarship.

Thanks for the response Jeff. Sorry for your loss as well. Is anyone familiar with the Universities in that area, especially those with agricultural programs?
