Hi Rob and Sarah,
I'm assuming you didn't get the email I sent yesterday since there was no reply (third time was not a charm unfortunately). Haven't gotten notification that any bounced back, so I guess those emails must be floating around in cyberspace somewhere. Anyway, I know Sarah is wanting to know if I'm growing ugly or orange this year. I actually have no clue! The reason for this is because I'm using the same seeds I hand out during my school visits and I buy them in bulk from Tom Beachy in Indiana. Since I buy them by the pound, they don't come with any genetic history available. I sincerely doubt there are any highly prized seeds mixed into the batch, but he has grown some awfully nice pumpkins in his patch and it should suit my needs fine. My goal is to grow maybe a 300 pounder to take for display at our county fair. But my green thumb has very little green in it, so right now I'm just happy and amazed I've sprouted my seeds and have two leafy plants snug in hoop houses outside.
And now for a funny story I'm sure Sarah will get a kick out of. In one of the chapters of my book the main character's dog knocks over her pots with her seedlings and tamples some of them. She is heartbroken and upset, but scoops them up and tucks them back into their pots, hoping for the best. She does lose a few of her young plants and ends up wondering if perhaps those were the ones destined for greatness. Well, when I came home after my author visit to Adena school, guess what I found? My dog had pulled my seedlings out of their pots and they were scattered all over the floor! I carefully replanted them, bite marks and all, not knowing whether I should be laughing or crying. What a weird feeling to be living through a scene in my book! Fortunately, only one of them bit the dust. On the front flap of the book it actually says to keep your dogs far, far away from your seedlings. I guess I should have followed my own advice:)
