EddyZ sayZ tomatoeZ give off gas..........I planted my tomatoes this year next to the red shed, far away from my patch.........not because of the red but because I heard it from EddyZ in Niagara........that Tomatoes give off ethylene gas when ripening... that promotes earlier ripening of near by other fruits...Last year my maters (Lots of em) where right next to the patch and my pumpkin did stop growing right around the time the maters where turning red..and after I saw Scherbers patch........so I blame it on my tomatoes.......lol...... But Im still trying to get more research on it......Apples and Bananas help ripen avocados due to the gas off..so dont store your apples with your bananas..........but I havent seen any articles....on tomatoes ......... Iz it True.....Or iZ Eddy pulling my .......finger?

i dont know about tomatoes but a 8 hr ride with pap to niagra sure gives off gas lol hamr

I was not pulling your legz, As fruit ripen they give off a pheromone, which will cause other fruit to ripen, apples are also bad, We have many times had green tomatoes and to expediate ripeningm we have added a ripe apple for this purpose.
Now, remember I grow in greenhouses, so my situation is a bit different. I close the greenhouses every night, so the air doesn't move as much as an outdoor patch, but it still can cause early maturity

you grew some big ones last year- Did you have any tomatoes nearby? if so, how far away were they from your pumpkins?

I had peppers in that greenhouse, all 100 plus days, Actually they matured about the same time as the pumpkin.

Shouldn't really matter much as long as the pumpkin isn't downwind from the tomatoes.

Had 12 tomato plants within 8' of one plant last year. The fruit never slowed up growing during the tomato ripening. Of course this was outside with more than adequate breeze most of the time.

We grew a field pumpkins last year right in along two tomato plants and sure enough the pumpkins closer the the tomatoes ripened and rotted before the 1st of October while the others made it unitl harvest at Halloween week.

A COUPLE QUICK QUESTIONS FROM THE QUIZZZZZZZZONATOR

1.if i walk around with a bunch of half ripe tomatoes in my front pockets how will it effect my home life?
2.does expelled gas help the pumpkin plants grow ? AND is it true that its works well for killing the dreaded squash vine borer?
3.do you need to make a loud noise at the time of release as a warning to others in the area ?or do you just let her fly?
4.lastly. will a cushioned blow have the same effect on bugs as a good open air blast?

I think your mistaken, as I know nothing about the gas you refer too. I believe you talking more on the lines of methane, lol. PLEASE STAND AWAY FROM AN OPEN FLAME.

Now as far as the half ripened tomatoes, probably won't help you at all, may I suggest a long english cucumber!!!!

As far as noise, Yes, I know they let out 3 long blasts before thet blow up dynamite

Does expelled gas help the pumpkins grow, I don't know, but I've heard the gas can sometimes peel paint, so I would say no.
