When transplanting 2 plants in a hill to see which one will be staying and which one will be taken out, how far apart should they be planted and how long should you wait until you decide to pull the slowest growing one out?

I usually do them about 2 feet apart. Once you are sure there's no double or flat vine, you can cut off the other plant. Pulling it out can cause you to damage the roots of the other plant.
