I found this article on msnbc that shows how roots manage to find their way around obstacles and then connue growing. There is a protein in root hairs that stimulates the uptake of calcium, thus encouraging root growth. However, once a root hits an obstacle the root hairs touching it halt the puction of this protein while the ones not in contact with it continue to grow. Once more root grows from these spots it will once again the obstacle and the process repeats, eventualeading the root around the obsticle so it may once again grow vigorously. I think that this shows why seedlings grow so well once they are established.
