How many growers use supports on the vine at the beginning to let it gradually lower to the ground to run and how many just let mother nature do her own thing?

I don't use any support but rather plant at a reasonable angle so that the drop is not so large.

mound soil under it, use bamboo stakes in an "X" pattern, do everything you have to, to ease the stress.

Tom hit the nail on the head. Sometimes, even after planting the seedling at an angle, it still wants to stand straight up. When it does, go ahead and let it, but be prepared to support it when it begins to vine. Soil under the main in a gradual training process is advised here as well.

Anyone have pictures of soil being used to support the main?

I lost 2 plants to wind gusts that were not properly supported. I now mound soil around the plant to keep it from bending too far when it gets windy.

I use some sticks in a X shape to hold down the vine when it is about 20 inch's long.

In 2006 I had a 670 Daigle that insisted on growing straight up. It took a lot of bamboo sticks and patience to ease it down.
