AL I could not find a diary for you or pictures, So I can't tell what your problem may be. Myself I like to let my side vines go a least 6" from main before I bury that section of main vine. I hope this helps

How long is the main, and how long is the longest secondary?

mains at 11 ft.. secondaries about 3 ft.. but only 2 or 3 secondaries per plant. as the main grows I let about 10" grow then cover up. posted diary about 5-6-08. have really been having high winds is one reason I try to keep vines covered. Thanks

Looking at your diary, it seems you've covered up the mainvine where the secondaries come out. This could be your problem. Mr. T's suggestion may be the way to go(let the secondaries grow out a bit before covering the mainvine). The secondaries come out at the junction between the mainvine, and each leaf on the mainvine.
I have heard of(and experienced) plants not putting out viable secondaries...they may only get 6" long then stop. I don't know what causes this. In my case I think tree root competition may have been a factor. I've had some plants where most of the secondaries grow out well, and a few are way less vigorous(and stop growing)....I don't know the cause of this.

I forgot to add. If I recall correctly, I don't cover the last 3-4 ft. of the mainvine, or however much is needed, to let the secondaries form properly....as the plant is growing.
You maybe able to uncover mainvine from the growing end, and see if you can still salvage some secondaries. Good luck!
