What differs between the 2 other than the clay carrier? Can I put some granular in water and then pour the water off and use it as a drench?

Need more info. Can you link to the label?

Jordan, Steve, This is a great topic to start on right now. Seedoutlet.com sells Holland's Land o Giants, both types so that smart people can read the details at Holland's site or I think there is some info on seedoutlet. We discussed this in the past and no matter what, the ingreditents have to touch the roots directly. As soluable sounds good, it still has to be injected as close to the roots as possible. Nobody is sure a drench will work.

I got this from the GVGO spring meeting. As far as I know the GVGO did a bulk purchase from Joel Holland.

Jordan, Now don't you go giving away GVGO secrets!
I drenched using granular last season and it seamed to work for me. But others here say there is no way it can work. I will keep an open mind on this for now until I see proof. However there are ways to bring roots to the surface so that such a drench would work. In fact I have talked with a few growers that have done so and produced over 1500. Try testing your theroy out on a few seeds using the drench method on seedlings. After drenching place in a warm area up to 90*f then open up the roots after a week or so.

Russ, I would never, lol. Seems one of our secrets is not a secret, but the other one still is. I haven't heard it anywhere else, and no one (outside of Ontario) will hear that from me, since we need to get back on top.

Drenching (whether an inoculant or a chemical):

We are trying to move some control agent to the soil's underlying root system.

Remember that the most effective filters often depend on sand as the filter media. Drinking water, pool filters, etc. often rely on sand.

Now think of the soil as a filter. The farther down the drench needs to travel, the more "filtered" the water becomes. The physical properties of the soil will greatly affect the degree of "filtering" that occurs.

Younger plants will be conducive to trenching ahead of the advancing vines so that either a granular or liquid-suspended inoculant may be placed ahead of the coming roots. It is the "in-season" inoculation (or reinforcement) that we are trying to rationalize here. Whether a granular carrier or a liquid suspension, if we don't make direct root contact, we aren't getting it done. Physically exposing the roots will result in some root injury.

I've recently been exploring the long-term fate of inoculants that are applied well in advance of their target host. I don't yet have any really conclusive data but we do need to consider the source of the inoculum. Different brands vary in their offering. Some (Holland's) rely heavily on CFUs that are collected vegetatively (from fungal strands) while others (PHC) rely more on spores. Each have their place.

Seems like every time I move my walk boards further away from my ever expanding plants...there are pkn roots at the surface...would this be a good time to innoculate them with myco?? Peace, Wayne

Wayne,

Those might be pumpkin roots & they might be germinating weeds. If they are pumpkin roots, then any inoculant delivery method would perform well assuming the roots are buried back up again.

For the record, none of the inoculants are required to list their "source" & therefore they don't.
