Last year the weeds eventually won the battle in my patch so I need to do something different this year to stay ahead.

This year I am thinking of covering the whole patch with weed mat. I'll cut the weed mat open as the vines grow to give them access to the soil. What do you guys think?

I saw a video of a guy using a propane torch in his garden to burn the weeds away. Anybody do that? How well does that work?

Any other ideas?

propane torch works good.
use round up --but be careful.

round up is best way to kill the weeds --fast

just spray it on as directed while the plants are covered with greenhouses ------ if no green houses then build a small one to cover as you spray

best to kill weeds in the early stages ------ like now

We use Roundup. Just be careful of over-spray.

We're thinking about weed fabric for just around the crown.

Another cool idea is Bart Toftness' 1.5 mil CLEAR plastic. He covers the patch then cuts it off as the vines advance. You're probably getting late for that trick for this year so Roundup is your best bet now.

Total Kill is cheaper and higher % active ingredient than round-up.
Turns em brown "in 24 hours".
