I noticed on one of my plants late last night that one of the stems was split. Should I get rid of this plant now or is it something I dont need to worry about? Do we know what causes these splits or is it genetics?

It depends on circumstances ! you mean split length wise ? & why did it split ? could be that it was tall & wind put to much strain on it ,to much of bend at once ! But i do not think that means its hurt to bad , it depends, if it looks good after split than its probly ok , But if you got others that are in that same area that are ok - than you might want to concider them ? I just started 1420 & 733 - 34 hrs ago & root has popped , maybe start another ? OR was it some great seed ?? for me its still the excact starting time (now)/ Good luck !

If it is length wise, no problem with it. Seal it with some captan paste and keep it clean. I actually made a wrap/bandaid around one I had a few years back, and it was fine. I just made it very loose so when the vine grew it didnt get hindered in any way. If it is not lengthwise, you have a problem.

I agree Rocky, if it's lengthwise split use captan and seal it with something like the bandaid or even a couple bread ties. You will have to loosen them every couple days until it heals. I did this on a 1446.5 Werner last year and ended up with one that I lost in mid August at 630lbs EST due to stem rot. My fault.

Thanks for the response. The split is length wise. I will keep an eye on it. I have noticed that it tends to look a little paler than the others but still seems to be growing. I have some that were started last week just as backups should a problem arise.
