We got bit by the color bug last year. Pumpkins are ORANGE LOL!
Prettiest big one I ever saw was the 1225 Jutras but it doesn't always throw that same blaze (darn 845 LOL). The 1016 mother was less variable.
1101 Northrup: I have an 1101 starting as I type. 670 Daigle: It's up but not quite all there right now. 500 Northrup: We grew the 500 last year (500 x 980 = 731). Pretty but had some "flecks". 980 Zunino: We grew the 980 last year (980 x 500 = 571). Deep even orange with no flecks at all...NONE.
571 Jepsen/Luce - Very pretty & on chart:

731 Jepsen/Luce:

For orange this year we have the 670 Daigle, 1101 Northrup, 571 & 731 J&L seeds started.

1225.4 Jutras 2003. My personal choice for Pretty Pumpkin.
It was almost Red, very round excellent shape, no dill rings, no dips or bulges.
0.75% heavy, 5 lobes, and tan seeds, and its progeny are proven up to 1443 pounds so far.
All considered, for a "good looking" perfact shaped, RED fruit, this one is awsome.
1159 Richards, and 1317 Rose, both also are in my opinion, the top 3.
The 1689, while being salmon in color, also had a very excellent shape, it was very good looking because of its good shape.

I actually think shape is more important to looks than color. My Opinion anyway.
I would like the way a cream color 1524 Liggett looks compared to any pancake shaped pumpkin, even if the pancake was bright red.

Meathead, I tend to agree with you regarding shape being a big part of what make a pumpkin appealing. I grow orange genetics, and hope for nice shape as well...I could be wrong, but it seems color is more predicable than shape.

Thats my thoughts on it, I cross color into shape. The 664 always throws large round ( heavy to the charts) pumpkins. When I made the cross on my 384 I crossed the 869.5 Calai ( bright orange) into the 664 liggett & the result was what I was looking for, a tall, round as a ball orange pumpkin ( my 672).

Paul, the 672 was a beauty! Do you know of any other 384's grown, and if so, did they show good color as well?

I gave a large handful to the farm market down the road who grow giants to sell in the fall. In the fall of 2006 they had numerous 300-400 lb pumpkins that looked just like my 672. But remember that they grow them to sell so no pumpkins were cut off, they just let them go. Now the funny part is my 672 is the 384 X self so you would figure the same...right? Wrong, this year I gave them a handful of seeds from my 672 & they let them grow the same way ( all pumpkins set) & they got a pumpkin off of it that weighed 745 & looked just like the offspring from the grandmother ( 664 Liggett). I'll post a couple of pics in my photo gallery.

Here in Michigan, it's all about 802 Kurilich and 1009 Kurilich. Both pure dark orange with no light flecks in it at all, high round shape, symmetry. I put the 802 up against anything listed above, since it has shown consistent dark orange offspring. The 1009 is still unproven, but was 802 x 1370, so I believe the offspring has a good chance of showing color as well. Frank
