Alrighty everyone... I put an 880 reinsvold in water for about 10 hrs and it has been on its heat source since 11:00am est. First what kind of soil do I need to get for my pea pots and secondly how long do they need to stay on the heat source.

hello,i take my off the heat source after a few days,do not want to burn the roots.i use regular seed starter and dip the seed with captan a fungicide.i only file and soak for about four hrs.keep it on the heat source till it sprouts/

Be sure to use a sterile soilless planting medium, one without any added fertilizer is best (we use promix). A equal mixture of peat moss, vermiculite and perlite is also an accepted standard. I put my seeds into 4" peat or coco pots after the seeds sprout at about 48 hrs. The planting medium needs to be moistened along with the pots first. I then place them in plastic sandwhich bags to prevent moisture from wicking out from the posts. Then back onto the heating pad untill well emerged. Careful not to get them too hot!

If you can't find the regular pro-mix either try the old standard 1/3 mix of peat moss, vermiculite and perilte. I have used this mixture for the past several years with good results.

Keep it simple...Miracle Grow potting soil has not failed me yet. Every seed I have ever started in it germinated and had no health problems. I know I will get blasted for saying this but I think all the hype about using seed starting mixes is totally overrated...blast away!!! lol

seed starters are a good insurance policy as they are lighter and make it easier for the seed to break thru the surface. potting soils tend to get heavy and hard after repeated wetting and drying periods yes they will germinate in any type soil. but why not go the safest route. plenty of seed starter mixes at any lawn and garden center

There are some books... but when your living on a fixed income, its kinda hard to buy extra stuff. Im out on short term disability and my wife got fired for being prego...(and btw IT IS IS LEGAL TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ANYONE YOU WANT AS LONG AS YOUR COMPANY HAS 15 OR MORE PEOPLE) the doc put her on 6 hrs away... So the only place I have to turn is here... smarta.... You know rog told me the ppl on this site are pretty cool... seems to me i meeting a lot of jerks.

Most people who grow giants are great people who would give you the shirt off your back if you needed it. I think sometimes they just like to poke fun at the newbies...we've all been there before. Don't be afraid to ask...there are no stupid questions. I've yet to meet anyone who knows everything there is to know about this hobby. My advice is to keep it simple the first year and build from there. Just google "growing giant pumpkins" and find a site that gives an outline of the basics. Follow that and build from there. Above all else...have fun!
