The recent warm spell here in Western New York State just had to be too good to be true. My seeds are popping up indoors and the smiling weather guys are predicting snow next Tuesday and Wednesday. At least in the high elevations of Wyoming County.. And, that is where I garden. Looks like the patch is going to wait until next Friday before the plants hit the soil. The prediction is for low 20's....Iam not sure if I could keep my hoophouses warm enough for that kind of spring arctic blast!

We got 2 inches of rain yesterday and last night and now it is snowing. 9 inches so far- kids got out of school early today and my wife is stuck at work. Will spring ever come? Kevin

Keep your plants in the house until this cold spell passes. You will have a lot of problems unless you have in ground heating cables as well as good heaters, seting out this early! I see by the map you arn't all that far south of me and I woldn't even consider setting out until after the 8th of May.

Part of my patch was flooded this morning. The forecast for Sunday and Monday is rain mixed with snow, with temps near freezing Monday and Tuesday mornings. I haven't started and pumpkins seeds yet, and I won't until after May 1. This has to be the worst spring I have ever seen around here.

We sure get teased. It is toasty warm today. We might hit tripple digets this weekend. Unfortnatly we are still having frost at night. I do have a few tomatoes in the garden that have servived our last snow with the help of covering them in plastic. Our last frost is normal late May. I hope it is different this year.

Still have a drift in my patch that's 3 feet tall. This season is very late here.

Social studies teacher, I am not too far from you in Livingston County, and predicting much the same weather as you. These nice warm temps are very tempting to start too early. I'm holding off putting anything out in the dirt til at least May 5th or so. I agree with CountyKid, keep them indoors, and after this cool spell it will be fine to put them out. By the weekend they are calling for temps in the 70's again. A minor blip and delay in the main scheme of things.

My garden is another story, I have peas that went in the garden on Saturday, and they survive fine in the cooler temps of Spring. Aaah three rows of fresh garden peas, I can hardly wait!

I have soaked and filed my seeds on Friday, and everyone has popped out of the dirt. Just waiting to see signs of green leaves now. By weeks end I suspect I'll have nice green leaves and waiting to hit dirt. So far so good. Good luck!

your mention of garden peas brought me back a good 55 years.

during the season all the trucks hauling peas used to go through town on the way to canning.
id hang out on the corner and when the truck stopped for a red light id grab a huge bundle of fresh peas and take them home to eat.
not that we were poor i just loved fresh peas --- lol
kids would not do that today because they never leave the computer long enough.

Pap, Glad I could bring back a good memory. My dad plants them every year. This year is my first time planting them in my own garden, never had the room before. So now it's wait for the sweet peas to sprout! YUM!

Pap-
Iam guilty of the same thing! When I was a kid we "appropriated" (grin) handfulls. From what Iam seeing in the attitudes of many kids, today it would be too much work for the kids to grab for the peas. Today they would want them delivered via takeout!
PS- The truck drivers used to give us a grin and stop a little longer at a stop sign. I guess there was a bit of kid still in them to... gee how the world has changed...

Way things are going we're going to have to go back to growing our own to make it affordable. Between the price of gas and groceries, not much left for fun. At any rate, off my soap box now. LOL!

Fresh garden peas are still one of my favorites. The nephews and nieces eat 'em like candy.
