Its sooo hard not to dig the lil seed back up and take a peek.....how long do you wait before you just have to see if its moving along?

I planted my seeds and flew to Philly for 4 days then came back home. I peeked at one on Friday. Then again on Saturday, and then again on Sunday. Then I went to Philly again and on my return they were all up and growing. So, I had to wait 4 days until I could peek.

I broke one during test germinations, I guess, I should wait for more than 24 hours, patience!

I broke my first one peeking. I don't peek anymore. My last pumpkin seed I planted before I left to Maui. It waited 8 days for me to get back home to show himself. Thats the longest any of mine have taken so far.

The roots are quite fragile and snap easily if the seed is moved. If you want to look, use a plasatic baggie and a wet paper towel to germinate, otherwise, I would just wait it out and look for green around the filed sides of the seed.

How do you all peek?
What did you use when you broke one?
My strategy was to use a toothpick and only dig deep enough to see the tap root coming out of the seed and only remove enough soil that would not leave the seed casing unsupported. Any deeper I knew I could upset the rest of the root system. This was my thought process. Whether or not I was doing it incorrectly or not is no longer relevant since all my plants came up and are now in the ground.

If you need to peek, use the paper towel method, then you will know for sure it germinated. Then peeking in the pot is easy, scrape away a little dirt and see if the seed is rising towards the surface. No damage possible there.

if you use the baggy method then you can peek all you want... just hold the baggy up to a light.

i will admit, i have been a peeker in the past, so now i intentially start a couple extra of my own seeds just so i can peek if nothing happens for any seeds after 3 days. this way i can tell if their are signs of life and i didn't screw up with too much moisture in my starter mix. if you have to peek, peek on expendable test seeds.
