if growing flag patterns, how far from the edge of the patch can you let the main vine grow....1', 2' or what?

also, can i let the first side vine grow 10' or 12'?

Just make sure there is enough good nutrients in the soil at the edge. I know I try to make sure all is even, but neglect the outer edges when adding compost and such.

ok, due to space issues, i will have the main vines 2' from the edges of the patch and instead of my secondarys being 12', i will have to only have them 10' on my 2 flag plants.
