I'm rotating my patch so that only 1/2 is being planted in pumpkins, the other half is to be planted in a cover crop and then tilled in. My thoughts are that this will help to 1-build organic matter 2-increase soil tilth 3-help control weeds (especially if I till it under several times during the summer and replant it in a second cover crop. 4-help retard/delay developement of soil pathogens Any thoughts on what should be planted? I was thinking peas early season and then till these in the June/July and replant with a warm season crop like oats/rye or beans and then till this in late August and plant rye again for the fall.

Buck wheat is good after frost is past. Grows fast and thick. Note must be tilled before seed developement. Good green mamure.

Sudan grass will produce more organic matter than anything else.

How well does the Sudan grass work at getting into the subsoil?
