My 1408 Daletas started looking bad a few days ago. Cots turned yellow and first 2 leaves were not making any progress. The seed emerged on Apr 2. This morning it had gone on to pumpkin heaven. Autopsy results showed the stem was mortally attacked by a squadron of larvae. What sort of cruel *&#@$ BUG would do this to a rookie?

milford, CT,

Brotherdave,....If is supsect right...corn seed maggots...thay got me last year. My problem was due to the manure I brought in having these larvae in it.
Before replanting make sure to spray and check for more.Mark

Will cutworm protection protect against corn seed maggots? Do they need to wrap around completely to kill the plant?

Thanks Milford. I'm sure you're right on. When I opened the door to one of the hoop houses I noticed a few flies. I thought they were adult horn flies since my cattle are just across the fence. Closer inspection and google info confirms your diagnosis. I've got some ideas now for a counter attack!!!

Would Grub-ex 2 weeks before planting kill off the cornseed maggots?
