ever notice how pumpkins and race hourses are a lot alike?
we breed them for various traits just like horses we feed them and care for them better than we do ourselves we worry if one looks ill and protect them from the eliments we even bid on them at auctions
how about the race itself?
some stumble out of the gate and never recover some break out on top and stay there all season some start slow and come on like a freight train at the 3/4 pole some break out on top only to fade in the stretch some are content to just run in the middle of the pack some also break down and must be destroyed
every now and then if you grow long enough you will experience every one of these pumpkins. its that one special pumpkin that does not come around every race, that keeps you coming back for more.

Pumpkin growing is also very comparable to running a marathon. I've done both and the patience required in this hobby is staggering. Hopefully I an hold myself back this year and stay in it for the long haul.

In the seed corn business we commonly refer to the different hybrids as either a work horse or a race horse. I think different pumpkin seeds are the same. Some seeds are race horses. That means that if all the conditions are right, they hit their stride and will pull out ahead of the pack and win the race (out performing the work horse). The work horse seed will never hit the big gains of a race horse, but will grow long and steady. These seeds need a long growing season and if the conditions are correct will win the race on the last lap! My feeling is that you want to have some of each type of seed in your line up.

One more thing. After working on the patch, one tends to drink lots of beer which leads to having to pee like a race horse.
