You will hear lots of different answers. I have done tests with 4 hours, 8 hours, 16 hours, and 24 hours. There was very little difference in the results. The only difference was, the longer I soaked, the shorter time in paper towel until the seed popped.

I go with 12 hours, and have no problems with germination.

Rob, My tests also agree with JRO, especially with newer seeds, Now don't hesitate to take the seeds out of the soak, and use a finger nail file or enev some sandpaper, just to break the outer layer, and then resoak, Also use you soaking water to water the seeds after they pop, Especially with adding the seaweed.

The seeds I had the best luck with so far I soaked for 5 hours in 10% solution of 3% peroxide. I had gemination in 30 hours. I forgot to file once. I took the seed out of the water and filed with a figernail file. Then I put it back to soak. Worked out fine.

4 hours in 1/2 peroxide 1/2 water, put a paper towel over it, it will keep it submerged, in the water.

I started 24 AG plants for a local garden club plant sale last week. After light filing around the edges, I put the seeds in 1/2 water and 1/2 3% peroxide for about four hours. I put the mix in a coffee mug and placed in my germination box at 85 to 90 degrees. After that, they went into the damp towels.

I have found that even though the seeds float, they absorb moisture.

Just so I'm not starting another thread and it's kind of related. How much help do you give a seedling in sheding its cover? I have one that seems to be having some difficulty but I seem to remember giving assistance to a seed years back and it did'nt like it.

no soakers or towel wetters here in little rhody.

just a five inch peat pot with plenty of holes.
moist sterile potting soil with mico, and dash of root shield and humic acid.
sand both sides of seed lightly
moisten as needed with weak solution of sea crop
germinate at a constant 90 to 95 degrees

everything is usually up in 3 to four days.
