I'm a pretty novice grower, though I've been growing smaller pumpkins for a number of years. While reading the novel Backyard Giants, I "saw" that Dick and Ron Wallace sent one of their seedlings through the mail.

I am currently attending college out of state, (I live in Florida) and my mother and stepdad have agreed to help me plant the different pumpkin types I am growing. I'm not looking to grow a Florida record, just to practice this year and learn new techniques.

What would be the best way to send a seedling through the mail to them? Does anyone have any experience in this?

Many thanks.

I would ship it in a cardboard box via UPS Next Day Air making sure the soil cannot come loose. Pot filled to the rim, cardboard disc with a hole for the stem taped to the pot. Soil normally moist. Lots of bubble wrap. Mark "Delicate & Perishable".

Last year I tired sending a 2 day old sedling from Denver, CO to Nashville, TN where my sister lived. I basically did as stated above and it made it there just fine. BUT the plant despite looking great, suffered some sort of shock and took 2 to 3 weeks to pull back out of it and was always well behind the growth curve. Never amounted to anything. ( But she and here husband were first year growers as well.)
