sandy sub soil means you will never have hard pan below the first 6 to 10 inches of soil
water will drain properly as well.
sandy sub is good. you may need to water a little extra during dry spells but thats better than retaining moisture and developing a disease prone area in your patch

Tina and Frank, Can you tell us how far down the sandy sub-soil begins? What is the composition of the top soil, it's pH, ect. Do you have good water for irrigating your pumpkins? If it gets over 90° frequently, you will have to do a lot of misting to keep the soil moist.

stan the sand begins at aprrox. a foot maybe foot and a half, it been a lawn but i added plenty organics so topsoil is a hint handy, but has a light claylike apperance, currently i am waiting on my soiltest but ph is between 6.5 and 7, only have city water.
