Suppression of Powdery Mildew by Compost Tea on Dill's Atlantic Giant Pumpkin Plants
There are a lot of theories that are tossed around, but as competitive pumpkin growers, most of us do not run experimental controls. If we try a new product and have success, we think that it must have worked, when just the variation in the weather could have been the real reason for our success.
So, I spent last growing season actually doing some real comparisons trying to suppress powdery mildew. The main focus was to compare passively aerated -VS- actively aerated compost tea (in combination with separate milk sprays) to see if there was any effect in their ability to control powdery mildew with the same ingredients.
While this experiment was complex, I had a scientific poster on display at this year's Niagara convention. Some people did stop by and ask questions, most did not. So, I have allowed Team-Pumpkin to post the same poster that was on display for everyone to look at.
Go to www.Team-Pumpkin.org and scroll down to the title: "THE" question everyone wants to know about, (Milk and Pumpkins)
Since I know many people here are more growers than scientific researchers, I have also taken the time to create a slide show to add further details to my research. Also, I give you what I think is a decent all around recipe that many people seem to be interested in.
I spent a lot of time researching my plan and evaluating my data. I plan on doing a similar trial this year. So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know so I can take your ideas into consideration.
Best of luck to everyone in 2008!!

Matt, You are a great resource for many of us. You are so right about our conclusions about products. We use the product one year and make decisions about it without considering that there may be factors other than the product that contributed to the success or faiure. Keep it coming!!! Mark

I would just like to let those of you who have never met Matt, know he his a true scientist in every since of the word. He is a graduate student working on his masters at UCONN and he is using his love for growing AGs as a part of his studies. I am fortunate enough to have Matt as my number one growing buddy. I believe any information Matt puts out has sound scientfic research behind it. I am actually a grower guinea pig for Matt and that's OK. I did OK last year using alot of his theories that he is proving. Old habits are hard to change but we must keep an open mind to new things and new ideals like Matt's. This the way we will get over that 2000lb goal!!!!

Great job Matt. Nice presentation! This is the type of research we need to keep the weights going higher and higher.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. I am glad that everyone is finding this interesting.
Hopefully this type of research will help people move toward methods that actually work instead of something that just sounds good.

Good stuff Matt. PM is the most common problem we all encounter so this is really good stuff.
Do you remember that guy from SFI who claimed Fusarium control with ACT? If you ever try to test that theory I can dig out his contact info again.
