wayne hackney was the original showman, with his orange tuxedo at topsfield. but does it seem that the goofiness has come to a all time high lately .haloween masks and any type of attention that some growers can get seems to be the norm.maybe im a old fart but it used to be about growin big pumpkins friends and havin some fun, but it seems to be a bit of a side show lately. every body can chime in and tell me to shut up or if they agree hamr

AT THIS MOMENT THE GIANTS ARE THE WORLD CHAMPS. The patriots are first losers. Tomorrow---probably the same thing as yesterday......

Lets see....hmmm....."pumpkins, friends, and having some fun".....while I can't speak for Ray, I think he grows pumpkins...I KNOW I'm having some fun,...and Ray is my friend as is Dave....so I think its very much on topic. Besides--YOU started the the at least once a week sideshow with Patriot updates and the NE "sideshow"...lol. So---I'm chiming in (as your post recommends (lol)..as I will with weekly updates for oh, say almost another year or so???? so, lol, I suggest you get comfy and get used to it Dave....LOL....your friend Glenn........

I agree with Dave, we don't need to look like circus freaks, it wont help the sport. People already think we are nuts, we don't need to look like them.

I think some of the outfits are a little crazy, but aren't we a little off for being addicted to growing pumpkins anyway? Some of the excessive craziness in peoples diaries, costumes at weigh offs, cross dressing, etc. is a bit over the top, but we are all idividuals. Like Pink Floyd said "Shine on you crazy diamond!"
BTW Dave Pink Floyd was a rock band from the 60's. In case you hadn't heard of them. In case you haven't strayed from your Victrola blaring Glenn Miller tunes! LOL

If a grower feels the need to dress up at a weigh-off what's the big deal? As far as I know, there are no weigh-offs that require costumes. Growing giant pumpkins is an eccentric sport/hobby which attracts eccentric people. Then again, there are those of us (y'know, like me) who take things way too seriously.

I've been to three different MN weighoffs. I didn't notice any pumpkin growers dressed in costumes.....maybe it's a regional thing.

Big Dave...what are you referring to specifically? Were there some wacky people in Niagara that got under your skin or are you just being a bit grumpy?

If it would make you feel better, why not just name the "some growers" that you refer to that irritate you in particular.

didnt make the niagra trip, and this wasnt intended to be an attack on anyone in particular. just a general observation over the past few years.also have had some comments and conversations with other growers lol

Life can get way too tough at times. We need laughter and smiles to get through these times. These people want to share their joy for life and put a smile on our face, more power to them! It would be a sad world without them.

Send in the clowns!

Dave we grow freaks of Nature, that alone puts in the headlights, We grow em, carve em, boat in them smash cars with them, so really we're only dressing for the occasion, I think it all fits. Now when somebody starts getting tattoo's on there arms of pumpkins and squash, then you should bring out the straight jacket or the the moonshine.
Remember the the say you are whar you eat, but also you are what you grow.

I don't think it matters, you could where a tux, halloween costume with blood spewing down your face, I know it would'nt help me. Soon as there is proof it makes a difference I will be out there with my favorite duds on or halloween costume,,,I'm thinking up some duzy of names for my pumpkins this year.

I've been planning on getting a AG tattoo for about 8 years now. It was going to be of my fist official pumpkin over 800#! (Only reason I didn't is because my 809.5# was ugly and greenish creme!) I decided the tat would wait till my first 1000#er,(haven't had to worry about THAT lately)! We must all understand Dave is a former cop and may still have some hidden "issues"! And yes, Dave, we're BOTH old farts! Way to go Eddy!!!!
