Any advice for controlling mice that eat through the bottom of 'kins to eat the seed?
Something that's reasonably safe when the dogs/cats have free access to the patch?

When I have a good pumpkin going, I toss some of the small bags of mouse bait around under the leaves. The bait disappears and no mice chew on the pumpkins.

If you're worried about your pets?? There's a product called "Mouse Magic",Though it may be too $$. It's like a huge tea bag filled w/corn(cob?) soaked in spearmint oil ,peppermint oil, and some other stuff. The smell is supposed to drive them off,3-4 weeks. Of course that's in a closed in area. I use them in my attic, cellar, root cellar and barn. Seem to do the trick. I also heard/use mothballs, much cheaper. Kevin

We take a 3" drier pipe about 3' long crush the ends just enough so a cat or dog can not access the poison. Refill as needed.

You can use oats and plaster of paris mixed together. When the mice or rats eat it, they die. This is a good solution because then when other animals eat the dead mice/rats, they are uneffected as there is no poison involved that could linger and hurt other animals. I think it is 1 part plaster to 4 parts oats. Put it under a box, in a pipe or ... to keep other non-target animals from it.
