I can't decide whether to go with the spider pruning approach this year or not. I'm not sure I mean the same thing others do when I say "spider," but what I did last year was let my sides keep growing indefinitely. When they hit the edge of the patch they just take a 90 degree turn and head on down the patch in the same direction as the main. That means that the sides aren't terminated 10-14 days after pumpkin set, which might be bad, I don't know. I was reading the book "Backyard Giants" and I kind of got the impression that Joe Jutras tried something like the spider ("pitchfork," page 76)but I'm not sure. Any thoughts? What works best?
