Can anyone give me ideas on what to use and build to shade my pumpkin patch this tear. I live in Utah and during the summer it gets really hot! Last year i noticed that my pumpkins really suffered from the heat. So if anyone has any ideas, pics, please let me know that would be awesome. Thanks Joe chapman

here on the east coast the hottest days usually will never get over 95 degrees. id guess an average summer in the area of 88 degrees here we used to build a canopy type roofing of 8 x 10 inch tarp over the fruit, we no longer do this. we just place a large white bed sheet or table cloth over the fruit. in your case if temps are high ninties and above most of the time? id use the canopy made of tarping material

Thanks for you replies but i need shade not just over the pumpkin but over the entire pumpkin patch. In Utah the average temp is at least high nineties and some days in above 0ne hundred degrees. My plants suffered, and alot had wilted leaves from the heat so i need ideas on what to use to cover an entire patch. Thanks for your help. Joe

you may want to check shade cloth at www.gemplers.com they seem to have it in large sections at reasonable cost, hope this helps... I have used it in the past, though i'm only in northeast ohio so hopefully something like this may benefit you.

Gordon Tanner sent me some photos from the UGPG patch tour showing screens over the entire patch. Maybe you can ask him.

I'll have to post some pictures of my set up. it looks red-neck-ish compared to Kevin's but it works.

Here is a picture inside of mine. It is made up of a car canopy. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=68512
on one side the shade cloth is attached to the fence. The fence has O hooks. The shade cloth has a shade cloth clip. I use a black plastic zip tie to hook them together. Longer zip tie's hook through the shade cloth clips and the frame of the canopy. The outside edge is a pvc pipe in re-bar. I drilled holes in the top of each pvc pipe and again a zip tie attaches to a shade cloth clip.
hoe this helps.
