A root will emerge first, and the stem and leaves will come out of the seed coat shortly after. You don't want to do any cutting on the young plant IMO.

Whitey, where did you get this idea?? Is someone playing tricks on you or do you really think that a giant pumpkin will grow from roots sprouted from the bottom of the fruit?
I think you need to ask your Mom or Dad to buy you one of the "how to grow giant pumpkin" books so that you have a grip on reality of how to actually get a pumpkin to grow successfully.

Sorry I misunderstood you White Pumpkin. No roots come out of the actual pumpkin. You may want to consider one of those books that NSB recommended to learn the basics.

Dang! I just looked at those pics you posted links to White Pumpkin. It does look like roots growing out the bottom of the pumpkin. I don't know what's happening there....I've never encountered this personally. I'm guessing a seed germinated inside the pumpkin, and the seed root poked through the pumpkin. That question wasn't so far fetched afterall LOL!!!!!

Was that spot soft at all? Looks like something may be growing into the pumpkin rather than out of it.

yeah it is! and i at first thought before i saw the pictures that yeah, you were talking about growing a pumpkin off of the root(s) that come off of the actual stem of the fruit which we always want to get rid of ...
i guess that since there would be no leaves to complete an actual PLANT at that point...GEEZ, maybe if the 'protector leaf' was left on right at the stem, it COULD actually sustain the fruit for a period of time. i have grown fruits right out to the end of season but they were not big, to 'pay' for a bigger pumpkin being lifted onto my trailer. maybe it would work, JUST to sustain the fruit. May be a soft spot and a seed may have germinated inside, pushing through. I had seeds germinated inside my fruit this year. I look at it as a good omen but not when they dig through the wall.
