Last year I Compared different styles of cold frames, the one that worked the best was also the simplest. Two windows screwed together. I covered the ends with plastic. I think the clear glass is superior to the plastic in allowing in the most light and the build up of heat. I vented them by sticking a couple two by fours under one side. Sounds like you are going to do the same thing with your windows.

Doug, if you start your seeds on the 30th of April here you will probably put the plants in the patch around the 8th to 10th of May. In our climate a cold frame really isn't needed. I know I'll probably have a lot of growers disagree with me on this but I speak from experience here. In Virginia planting any earlier than this has no advantage. 150 days on a plant is plenty and starting on the 30th puts us pretty much at 150 days at harvest day.

Also, from my experience, the smaller the cold frame, higher the temps. Make sure you have some ventilation so that on a sunny day you don't fry your seedlings!

I use small cold frames, but luckily I have the pvc clips, that allow opening and/or closing of the ends, in a very short time frame. Plastic over the top is secured w/tape...and the ends are clipped on...if the sun is out, the clips come off!!! Great advice, Edwards!!! Peace, Wayne
