I have a question that I have been wondering about for a while. Let's say you cross a 998.6 Pukos and a 1225 Jutras (that cross produced the 1689.) But your patch had problems and your pumpkin was only 100 lbs. But another grower (Joe Jutras) did that cross and grew a 1689 lb. pumpkin. Then let's say that the 1689 grew a 1700 pumpkin. Could the 100 pound pumpkin grow a pumpkin that size too? Even though the weight of the pumpkin was small, would it be able to grow large pumpkins? Thanks

Although not all seeds of the same genetic makeup are created equal, technically yes. The 125 Wolf and 227 Leland are both great examples of what your asking.

The only problem I see in your question is if the patch problems are so bad that a 998 can only make it to 100#'s that 100# the offspring won't do any better.

YES to your question!
Now on another note, and probably just semantics,
"Let's say you cross a 998.6 Pukos and a 1225 Jutras (that cross produced the 1689.)" A 998.6 Pukos x 1225 Jutras cross, is not the cross that is responsible for producing the 1689...it is the cross OF the 1689. The cross responsible for producing the 1689 is the cross of the 998.6, the 1420.5 LaRue x 1446 Eaton. Like I said, probably just semantics, but just so everyone is on the same page. BF

To add to what Brian said, the 1225 Jutras had no impact on the 1689 fruit. We won't see the effect of the 1225 Jutras until the seeds of the 1689 are planted. The 998.6 Pukos get all the credit for the size of the 1689.

Would the seeds from the same cross have the same potential? The answer is maybe.

Should be yes...look at the 1068 and the 723....Mr Bobier hits the 1500 mark on a 723 he planted last year.......Bet the 2000 lb mark is topped....with a 1068 that gets magically discovered......So yes...Question is how many other lines are out there waiting to be discovered, with a high seed count......?....1502?....1385?.....others?

Yes, Past researchers have pointed out that the majority of a GPs final size rests on the environmental conditions it was grown in... This is why the more experienced growers tend to have better luck getting heavier weights. They're more knowledgable and their soils are better prepared with every year...

Even in my own patches - the weights are increasing every year! I believe if we hadn't had 3+ weeks of 100+ temps and drought - I would've had my first +800 .. First month's growth was in line for 1,000+ - then the heat hit... Though I'm just happy when I get at least 30 days growth and viable seed for the next year's crosses... But these weights are increasing even as my 'seed lines' become more inbred..

Oh, I see! So it's not the weight of the pumpkin grown, it's the genetics. Thanks for explaining it to me!

"Yes" but it won't. The type of grower that CAN grow to 1700 lbs won't spend much time fooling around with genetic crosses. Better growers want to see that both parents made their full potential without splitting, ribbing or demonstrating other bad behavior.

That's what I thought. I didn't think a great grower would fool around with a 40 pound pumpkin.

S,teacher...environmental conditions are determined to a certain extent on where you grow?? Us folks down here will never have the environmental conditions, that dem folks near the US, Canadian border have...ie... new england states (specially RI), washington, oregon, pennsylvania, northern ohio, michigan, iowa!!! Don't get me wrong....1394#er grown in KY last year!!!! After seeing this huge pkn with minor pin hole, I truly believe a 1500#er will see the scales in the south this year!!!! Hope everyone has a 275 VanHook!!!! Peace, Wayne

He crossed the 998 pukos (that he grew the 1689 off of) with his 1225 2003 plant?

Wasn't that 1225 Jutras best looking pumpkin of 2003?

If that is the one I am thinking of, it had really nice shape, and a very good orange, almost red color.

I wonder if any of the 1689 seeds may throw one over 1500 that are pretty?
