I think we missed the monthly "What are you planting?" thread for this month. So I figued I'd start one, with a slight twist.

What are you planting?

And

What are your goals for the 2008 season?

And

What are you doing to try to make your goals a reality?

1423.5 wallace (1068 wallace x 1041.5 mckie) and 1350 wallace (1068 wallace x 998.6 pukos)but, I have changed my mind once already. Soil test, alot of time on this site reading up on pumpkin growing. 2nd year grower, 500 pounds.

Well I keep changing my mind, and keep changing the number of plants. (dad and I need 2 each for 2 weigh offs.) but here is the list now. 1502, 910Todd, 275 vanhook, and a couple others we are still debating over.

I'm seriously considering going with unproven seeds with great genetics. I've always been very hesitant to do that because it used to be such a crapshoot, but now the gene pool seems to have been strengthened quite a bit and you can pretty much count on strong results with a good cross (about as much as you can count on that 845 Bobier growing a monster, for example).

So, I'll probably go with my own 983.5 Isom 06 (1370X1225), which has only been grown by one grower, and with two other seeds from 07. At this point I'm leaning toward the 1010 Daletas (998.6X898) and the 1524 Starr (227X985) because the crosses bring together diverse genetics AND these are crosses that nobody is likely to ever make again. I mean really, who out there has a 998.6 and an 898 that they're going to cross this year? (or a 227 Leland) Nobody. I might as well grow it this year.

Oh, goals and what I'll do to get there:
1. Have fun. This includes letting my 3,5 and 8 year olds spend a lot of time in the patch with me, which means that I run a high risk of getting trampled leaves, but so be it.
2. Still, my goal is to grow a 1200 pound pumpkin. Let's be honest with ourselves, we all really want to grow something MUCH bigger than we've ever grown before and we'll be a little disappointed with just a "personal best" or a meaningful summer! Once you've grown a 1000 pounder you want a 1200, once a 1200, a 1400, etc.

Things I'm doing differently: tea, lots of micorrhizae and more water (warmed well water, too)

1502 Wallace, 1350 Wallace and either the 1180 or 1408 Daletas. Probably the 1180.
Soil test done and amendments added to get the soil right.
also plan to improve insect and disease control.
Goal: 1,000 pounds

Wayne--I haven't hooked it up yet, but I've got an 1100 gallon holding tank with a pump. Believe it or not, I've had it for over a year and just didn't get around to hooking it up last year. Some people say that warm water isn't as big of a factor as people used to think but . . . who knows! If I were a plant, I think I'd like soil temperature water.

PumpkinBrat--are you going to cross the 1041 and the 998? If so, could I be the first to come forward to offer his firstborn for 2008 seeds!? It would have cost me a thousand bucks to get those two seeds this year, so no 998 for me in 08. Best of luck. The 985 would make a great cross with either of those, too

I do plan on crossing both ways. 1041 x 998, 998 x 1041. Joe Pukos even told me that he would love to see that cross. The 998 doesn't seem to ever go heavy. Just a little bit. 985 x 1041. 962 x 1041. I think the 962 Pukos will see a bit of dirt this year. A real sleeper. The 1420 Larue in this seed(962) is the same in both the 998 and 1231 Pukos.

The plan here is 998 Pukos, 1207 Young and I have to try one of my own, the 1155 Frantz. My goal is to break 1200 lbs at the Iowa state fair and still have something to take to Indiana Fair. Looking forward to this years plant reduction to have a summer life outside pumpkins.
