Been a while since I've had time to get on here... But due to some irrigation issues I experienced last year - I'm forced to limit my growing area to just the front patch this year... So instead of 20 plants - it'll be a handful..

So if anyone's interested in strange crosses - here's some that I've got plenty of extras:

Jarradale females X 300 Peck GP & 135.5 Blalock GS & 300 Peck GS

Red Kuri Female X 135.5 Blalock GS

970 Seals GP Female X Chioggia

300 Peck GP X Chioggia

And 'Motley' - a wild looking multi-color 80lbs (3-4 different colors). Female was a Big Max X 300 Peck GP this was pollinated with a 'white' 169 Peck.. Made a very wild big jack o' lantern.. See pictures on my '07 diary...

Obviously they don't get what you have here. The only pumpkin they recognize is an Atlantic Giant. That Jarradale x 300 Peck sounds interesting. If I had the pumpkin patch in operation I would be sending you a bubble. One of Our Best sellers was a Red Warty Thing x 735 Pukos...

Greetings, all --

Scienceteacher -- I just read (ok, maybe I skimmed) your Grower Diary from last year. I think what you're doing is fascinating, although I didn't follow it all. I'm sorry that the ongoing drought conditions are forcing you to curtail your study.

From my previous reading I understand that the R gene for red/orange color is dominant. I'd been thinking that Red Kuri and Rouge Vif D'Etampes / Cinderella would be the two C. maximas to cross with AGs to get a really impressive color.

If I understand this correctly, Red Kuri was crossed with a C. maxima squash in the hopes that the offspring would show the degree to which the Red gene is dominant over the Blue gene? Something along those lines?

What do you expect the Red Kuri cross to look like? Would you have any preference as to the next cross made?

This is my first year and I'm not certain how many plants I'll get in the ground, but I'm very interested in your Red Kuri cross. You can email me at [email protected] or if you post your email I'd be happy to contact you directly.

Thanks,

Liane

It is too bad that drought is hurting this project. There is some very cool work done here. Someone with a little extra time & space (& water) could really get a lot out of what's been done & possible push it along.

Thanks Rahe, for taking the time to explain it... I've found that some Green genes seem to dominate or codominate over the 'B-gene' orange (this is the primary orange gene found in the AG GPs)... So I'm fascinated by getting the R-gene into the GPs as well as the true Blues.

Motley was of great interest, since the Big Max is an R-gene, whereas the 300 Peck was a B-gene carrying a green. The 169 Peck is an apparent homozygous B-gene. So this one will have offspring in the front patch!

The Chioggia crosses should be pretty interesting as well. Not only for the deep green, but also to see the 'wart production' on the offspring. The 970 Seals also is an apparent homozygous B-gene plant. So the question to be answered is: Will the offspring be Mottled - or deeper Orange? These will also be in the front patch..

I'd like to see more of these oddities grown. So for those of you that can spare a spot for some weird Jack-o-lanterns - consider an oddity..Although they might just hit a few hundred lbs!!. Just send me pics of plant and 'kins/squashes' - for my records!
