Active ingredient is trifluralin. This is a root inhibiting Dinitroanaline herbicide. It's never really been proven out in a valid study but most agree that some loss in weight would be expected. While this is horrible for a competitive grower, someone churning out 100-200 pounders for sale would benefit from using a pre-emergent herbicide.

Mechanical weedng kills roots too if the grower isn't careful.

I used it in my patch this past year (not the commercial version, the type you buy at Walmart, etc - which is supposed to only be good for grasses. Correct me if i am wrong Steve)

Anyway, I had my best year by far....I always have had trouble with grasses....not at all in '07. Led to a new PB of 678...which i know isn't 1400 lbs, but my previous PB was 220.

Stevenson, I also have trouble with that "crab grass" I think you call it, it shoots up in different parts of your growing area in clusters, and when you go to pull it ,it seems like your pulling 1 yard of dirt with it. Some one said corn glutton, or corn meal? that putting this down in the spring helps to control weeds better??, I still cant figure that one out, but I have heard that, anyone else here anything on this?

Brooks,

The active ingredient in Preen(with the purple top) IS corn meal gluten. Based on its price, it would not be cost-effective to use. I second what Steve sais as well.

Round-up is still the best bet.

Are any of you using a hand held herbicide wipe on applicator? I see one called the sideswipe advertised in catalouges. Its under $50 and looks like a good alternative to spraying Round-up and having to worry about drift.

I had forgotten that there is now an "organic" Preen. Original Preen is still Treflan (trifluralin). It does also control broadleaf weeds if the seeds are small in size.

Corn Gluten is barely effective on grassy weeds & it is VERY expensive this year. We wholesale it for $30 per 50 lbs which treats 2500 sq ft. But like I said, Corn isn't very effective & if it was, root injury to the pumpkins would be anticipated.
