I was wondering how many plants you guys grow at the beginning of the season and then how many you end up with at the end of the season.

I usually start 10 to 12 pumpkins and end up with the most, 5 pumpkins, I usually see which plant is growing the best and then concentrate on the best ones. Some of course I lose because of disease or some other problem. I usually count on 3 out of 10 plants wont make it.

Last year started with too many.....10 plants....got overwhelmed at about 15 ' when it rained real good and everything grew 1' over night and it was too muddy to bury and cut for a few days, then it got away..........this year....reduced to 4 competition, and two in the genetics patch...GIve Biz 2 more plants to grow with,....

I started out with 2 my first year in a very small patch. Last year I increased the patch size to 1200 sq ft. and put 4 plants in, way too many for me to handle. So this year, I amended the same patch size with some good fertilizer and leaf compost, and did my soil test.

Also, only going to plant 3 this year. It's hard to narrow it down to just three plants, but, in the long run for a bigger pumpkin, I'm all for it.

another problem I have is seed choices, there is 20 or so seeds Id love to grow, so many good seeds out there I want to plant, so growing 10 kinda makes the seed choices easier but it sure doesnt make the work any easier thats for sure. Every year I say Im only going to grow 4 , but I know Im just kidding myself when ever I say that.

I tried 3 last year (plus one pollinator), I'm trying to convince myself I have time for five this year. I agree Brooks, so many great seeds... I hate to leave a big one "on the bench".

Have no choice this year til I can prove my case. Then next year, I'm sure I'll earn my stripes for more ground and more plants. So far 256 and 275 are my personal best. I have to do better this year. LOL!

I grew 3 plants two years ago(ended with one "good" pumpkin). I grew 4 plants last year and ended with two "good" pumpkins. I hope to grow 3-4 competition plants this year, and maybe one for genetics. I'm not counting back-up plants.

We are dropping down to 6 plants this year from 8, but increasing the plant size to fill the same area. This will give us 25' x 30' planting areas. We usually loose one or two so we hope to finish with at least 4 compitition fruit.

We have grown as many as 12 plants, but even with two of us its pretty hard to do a decent job of this many plants

9-12 or so this year.

I usually end up with about the same number of pumpkins as plants. I split a few, but i usually have 2 pumpkins on a couple of the plants.

Brooks: 4 here, 3 for size, 1 for color. I just have a shallow well so I worry about running the well dry if I do too many. Also space is limited -- 1700 sq ft for the 4. Also there is one little area for a pollinator.

2 here. I will start 4, 2 backups behind my best hopes. I have 1100 sq ft of prepared soil, but I always let another 5-600 sq ft of plant run into the lawn. It always help anchor it down as the tendrils will grasp nicely to the lawn.

I think I tried to hard with to many last year, although it was fun. This year its only going to be 6 or 8 and more of the quality care that it takes.

when at all possible and space is not a consern we like to plant between 8 and 12 plants
last year 8 and this yea rwith new patch extension we will try for 12 plants
we have not had any problems with loosing an entire plant but have lost some bases and also an occasion one or two will not produce as we would like so we yank them out or pick um early
no need to continue putting work and expense into a non contender is how we feel about it
to much work goes into it
when you tend a large anmount of plants a good success rate is 75% making it.
if you plant three then quite possibly only one or two will make it all the way.
to many things can and will at times go wrong

I have room for 12 easy. Tried 10 once and it's way, way to much work. Last year I grew 8. This year my heart tells me 6. Spend more time with each plant. I think it's best to set a side 1/3 of the patch each year. Compost the spot and plant a crop of alfalfa to plow under the next spring.
