A yellow fruit at blossom time usually means pumpkin. A yellow fruit before the flower is ready to blossom can mean pumpkin or an aborting/absorbing squash. Sometimes the female flowers dont make it to bloom day and the green ones will turn yellow, stop growing, and die. When a green fruit aborts shortly after pollination it will turn yellow, so a squash gone bad is yellow.

yellow or green ... it doesn't matter when the fruit is small... I've had both grow into orange pumpkins. You can't tell which way it will go ... to good orange side ... or to the dark evil green side until it is much larger. may the force be with you in your growing efforts. gordon
